Your logo should be a tool to communicate your brand message, not a piece of art that incorporates all your favorite things.
When designing a small business logo, you must take into account your brand story, brand values, and ideal client or customer. A successful small business logo helps enhance and reinforce the brand message.
Too often entrepreneurs clutter up their logo design by trying to include everything they have ever liked into their logo. They try to include all of their favorite colors, graphic elements they have seen that they like, and some type of 3,000 word story elaborate story into their logo.
But in reality, the elements that go into designing a small business logo, including the graphic elements, typefaces, colors, and/or illustrations should not be designed based on what you like at all! Your logo should be designed based on your message and ideal client and should reflect the true essence of what the business stands for.
Here are the five characteristics of a successful small business logo:
- SIMPLE: Your logo needs to be simple and it needs to communicate your message clearly. Your audience must be able to read and understand the logo at all sizes – large and small, and in black and white.
- MEMORABLE: Your logo needs to be recognizable and it needs to make sense to your audience. Your business logo needs to resonate with your audience and create an “I’ve seen your before,” trigger in their brain.
- UNIQUE: Your logo design must be unique and stand out from the crowd. Do your research before you get started on designing a logo. If your logo doesn’t help differentiate your business, you risk blending in with your competition.
- INTERESTING: Your logo must get the attention of your prospects, clients, and audience. It needs to speak to your ideal clients, help communicate your message, and visually attract their attention to keep them engaged longer.
- CLASSIC: Be careful not to incorporate fads and hot trends into your logo just because they are popular right now. If your logo is simple, memorable, unique, and interesting, and you focus on designing a logo that speaks to your ideal client, your small business logo should last the lifetime of your business, with maybe only a tweak or two here and there.
Together, all five of these characteristics of a small business logo will help you position yourself in your niche, communicate with your audience, stick in their minds and hearts, and be remembered.
